about

The Band of Weeds began in the spring of 1991 and continued till 1993 or so.

I'd been listening to a lot of early big band jazz around then, and this band was the outlet for ideas coming in from that direction, while continuing some of the eclecticism and noisiness found in my previous band, The Ordinaires.

The band's name is a riff on 'Chant of the Weed', which was Don Redman's theme song back in the early thirties, and which the group played in our live sets.

This album collects the studio efforts of the group. Tracks 1-3 were never released. Track 4 was solicited by the Knitting Factory for a Beatles tribute compilation. Tracks 5-8 were released as an EP by the Hello Recording Club.

Track 9 is a demo of a song proposed for a film project, featuring vocal by Brian Dewan.
